San Francisco City Hall is hands down one of the most photogenic buildings I have ever shot in. The Beaux-Arts architecture feels like something out of a European palace, but it is right here in the heart of SF.
The rotunda is the crown jewel. That natural light pouring in from the dome creates this soft, even glow that makes every photo look like a painting. No harsh shadows, no bad angles. Just gorgeous light all day long.
What I love most about shooting here is the intimacy. City Hall weddings tend to be smaller, more personal. It is just the couple and the people who matter most. No filler, no fluff. And that energy always translates into the photos.
The grand staircase is iconic for a reason. But most photographers just park couples at the bottom and shoot up. I take my couples through the entire building because every floor, every balcony, every window has a different feel. The fourth floor balcony looking down at the rotunda? That is where the magic happens.

We meet at the entrance, go through security, and check in. I am already scouting light conditions while you get your paperwork sorted.

This is where the magic happens. We explore all four floors of City Hall, finding the best light and the most dramatic backdrops. Every floor has a different feel.

We step outside for a few shots on the steps with the Civic Center behind you. Then you celebrate however you want. Champagne, lunch, or just walking hand in hand through the city.
City Hall faces east/west so morning light fills the rotunda beautifully. The dome creates diffused light all day, but 10am to 2pm is the sweet spot for the rotunda. For exterior shots, golden hour light hits the front facade perfectly in the late afternoon.
Street parking around Civic Center is metered and competitive. The Civic Center Garage on McAllister is the best bet. Plan to arrive 30 minutes early because security lines can take a while.
No tripods allowed inside. No flash during ceremonies (I never use flash anyway). You need a photography permit for professional shoots beyond the ceremony itself. Ceremony spots are assigned, not chosen. The rotunda is the most popular and fills up fast.
The most popular times (especially Friday afternoons) book out months in advance. The rotunda ceremony spot is the most requested. If you want it, book 3 to 4 months ahead.
Unlike outdoor venues, City Hall looks incredible all day because the light comes through the dome. Morning weddings are actually my favorite here because the light is soft and the building is less crowded.
We will be walking through the entire building. Four floors of photo locations. The marble floors are beautiful but not great in stilettos for extended walking. Bring a comfortable pair to swap into.
The ceremony itself takes about 5 minutes. The photos are what you are really here for. Give yourself at least an hour after the ceremony so we can explore every floor without rushing.
You need at least one witness (two is safer). If you do not have anyone, the clerk can sometimes find someone, but do not count on it. Plan ahead.

For your ceremony photos, no extra permit is needed. For extended portrait sessions throughout the building, a photography permit is recommended. I handle all the logistics so you do not have to worry about any of that.
The dome creates beautiful diffused light all day, so there is no bad time. Morning (before noon) is my favorite because the building is quieter and the light in the rotunda has this soft golden quality. Afternoon works great too, especially for the north side corridors.
I recommend 60 to 90 minutes after your ceremony. That gives us time to explore all four floors and capture a variety of looks without rushing. Your ceremony is usually about 5 minutes, so the photo time is really the main event.
City Hall is only open for weddings on weekdays (Monday through Friday). Weekend ceremonies require a special event rental which is significantly more expensive. Most couples go with a weekday ceremony and it honestly feels more intimate.
