Wedding
tradiciones explicadas.

Every Mexican-American + Latin wedding ritual — what it means, when it happens, why it matters. For couples planning a heritage-rich day. For partners new to the tradition. For photographers + planners who want to do it right.

El lazo

The lasso

White cord (often a rosary or floral lasso) draped figure-8 around the couple after they exchange vows. Placed by the padrinos de lazo. Symbolizes their unity + the unbreakable bond. We have a dedicated /lasso-ceremony-explained page if you want a deeper dive.

Las arras matrimoniales

The 13 wedding coins

Groom presents the bride with 13 gold coins during ceremony. Symbolizes his commitment to provide. Padrinos de arras gift the coins. The bride accepts them as her acceptance of the union. Beautiful close-up moment.

Padrinos de boda

Wedding sponsors

Like quinceañera padrinos but for a wedding — close family + friends who sponsor specific elements (lazo, arras, ramo, velación, etc.) and witness the ceremony as ceremonial guides.

La velación

The veiling

During the Catholic mass, a white veil is draped over the couple's shoulders by padrinos de velación. Symbolizes their unity under God + family blessing.

Entrada con mariachi

Mariachi entrance

Mariachi band leads the couple from ceremony to reception (or first dance). High-energy. Some couples have mariachi for cocktail hour, others just for the entrada. Multi-camera coverage to catch the band + couple together.

Vals con padre + madre

Father + mother dances

Traditional first dance with parents — bride dances with her father, groom with his mother. Often emotional. Songs typically chosen for cultural significance.

El baile del billete

The money dance

Late-reception ritual — guests pin dollar bills to the bride's veil or dress in exchange for a dance. Symbolizes the community supporting the couple's new life. Cash collected goes toward honeymoon. Photo cue: capture the giving + the bride's reactions.

La víbora de la mar

The snake of the sea

Same as the quinceañera version — chain of guests holding hands snakes through the reception, often with bride + groom held aloft. Pure chaos + joy.

El brindis (toasts)

The toasts

Multiple toasts during the reception — often from both fathers, both mothers, the maid of honor, the best man, padrinos. Bilingual families have toasts in both languages. Mic + audio coverage is critical here — we mic the couple + the speaker.

Folklórico ballet

Folkloric dance

Choreographed traditional dances during reception — Jalisco, Veracruz, Norteño, regional styles. Sometimes performed by hired troupe, sometimes by family. Multi-camera for formation coverage.

FAQ

Most-asked.

Do bilingual / bicultural couples need to include all of these?+
No — pick what feels meaningful. Most couples include 4-6 of these (typically lazo, arras, mariachi, velación, brindis, victor). Some couples blend with their partner's heritage (Korean, Italian, Indian, Filipino, AAPI).
How does this affect the wedding timeline?+
The traditional Mexican-American wedding runs 8-10 hours when you include all rituals (vs 6-8 hours for a non-cultural wedding). We build buffer + coordinate with planner so we never miss a ritual moment.
What about the Catholic mass length?+
Full nuptial mass: 60-90 minutes. Plus pre-mass family + photo time = 2 hours minimum at the church. Plan for that block before reception.
Can we do the rituals without a Catholic ceremony?+
Yes — many modern couples do civil ceremony + cultural rituals (lazo, arras, mariachi) without the Catholic mass. The rituals stand on their own as cultural moments.
How does AGV photograph these rituals?+
Bilingual team. Pre-event call to learn which rituals you're including + their order. We position 30 minutes ahead of each ritual moment. Cinematographer mics the lazo + arras dialogue. We treat el lazo with the same care as the first kiss.
