Sonoma County Vineyard Weddings

A Sonoma wedding,
quieter than Napa.

Six estates, five regions, and the Sonoma-vs-Napa breakdown nobody else publishes. Vineyard, redwood, river, or coast — all 1.5 hours from SF.

Sonoma is what Napa was 20 years ago. Smaller crowds, broader landscape variety, lower venue fees. The same wine, often the same photographers, often the same guests — minus the gridlock on Highway 29.

If you want a vineyard wedding without the corporate-Napa feel, this is your county.

Pick the region. Pick the estate. The day takes care of itself.

Five regions

Where in Sonoma County?

Healdsburg

The polished side of Sonoma. Plaza dining, boutique hotels, top tasting rooms. 90% of "Sonoma luxury weddings" happen within 10 miles of Healdsburg Plaza.

Russian River / Guerneville

Redwood country. Cool, lush, river-front venues. 20°F cooler than Healdsburg in summer. Best for couples who want a "California cool" not "California sun" wedding.

Sebastopol / Apple Country

Slower, agrarian, hippie-luxe. Apple orchards instead of grape vines. Best mid-budget area. 25 min from Healdsburg.

Sonoma Valley / Glen Ellen

South Sonoma, Jack London Park, Mayacamas backdrop. Old-money historic estates. Closer to SF (1 hr drive) than Healdsburg (1.5 hrs).

Bohemian Highway (Coast)

Highway 1 + redwoods + Pacific. Bodega Bay + Jenner. Foggy, dramatic, off-the-radar. For couples who want photo-driven weddings without the heat.

FAQ

Most-asked questions.

Sonoma or Napa — which one?+
Sonoma if you want quieter crowds, more landscape variety (redwoods + river + coast + vineyards), and 30–40% cheaper venue fees. Napa if you want the big-name estates (Beaulieu, Charles Krug), Yountville Michelin restaurants for guests, and the more recognizable "wine country wedding" brand. Photography quality is identical in either.
Should we do a redwood wedding instead?+
If you have ever dreamed of a redwood-grove ceremony — yes, do not skip Sonoma. Korbel + the Russian River area have natural redwood ceremony sites that nowhere else in California can match. Pair a redwood ceremony with a vineyard reception for a multi-aesthetic gallery.
When should we book?+
For Saturday weddings May–October, book 12–15 months out. Sundays and Fridays book 6–9 months. Off-season (Dec–March) you can book 3 months out — vineyards are bare but you save 35–40% on venue fees.
Best month for Sonoma?+
September. Cool mornings, warm afternoons, vineyards turning gold. October second-best — peak harvest aesthetic. May + June are strong for greenery + flowers. July + August are hot (95°F+ in Healdsburg) — book with shaded venues only.
Transportation logistics?+
Same as Napa — 2-lane country roads, gridlock at sunset. Sonoma upside: smaller distances between venues + lodging. Most Healdsburg + Sebastopol weddings work with 1 shuttle (30 ppl). Russian River + Glen Ellen weddings often need 2 shuttles.
Where should guests stay?+
Healdsburg: Hotel Healdsburg ($600–900), Camellia Inn ($350–500), h2hotel ($400–700). Sebastopol: Sebastopol Inn ($200–350). Russian River: AutoCamp ($300–500 glamping). Glen Ellen: Beltane Ranch ($400–600). Most Sonoma areas have Airbnb dense enough to base everyone within 10 min.
What does a Sonoma wedding photographer cost?+
AGV starts at $4,000 for 8 hours of Sonoma coverage including travel from the Bay Area. Most couples book 10 hours ($5,000–$6,500) which covers getting-ready + first look + ceremony + full reception. Add $1,500–2,500 for rehearsal-dinner-Friday + brunch-Sunday weekend coverage.
