Lake Tahoe Wedding Photography

A Lake Tahoe wedding,
summer or snow.

Six venues, six seasons, the smoke calendar, the altitude rules, and the California-vs-Nevada license logic. Plus the Tahoe golden-hour window every photographer plans the day around.

Tahoe is the highest-leverage wedding region in California. One backdrop, four seasons, both sides of the lake. Your couple portraits look like four different weddings depending on the month.

It is also the most weather-volatile. Smoke in August. Snow in November. Mud in May. The right month is half the planning.

June, September, October, December–March. Skip May. Build a smoke buffer in summer.

Month by month

What Tahoe looks like.

June
Snow finally melted. Wildflowers in bloom. 70°F days, 50°F nights. Lake too cold to swim. Top month for outdoor ceremonies. Books 12+ months out.
July–August
Peak summer. 80°F days, perfect lake temp. Smoke risk from Sierra fires (real, plan a backup date). Crowds heavy. Premium pricing.
September
Best month overall. Cool mornings, warm afternoons (75°F). Smoke risk decreasing. Crowds thin out. Aspen turning gold by mid-month.
October
Aspen peak gold. 60°F days, frost mornings. First snow possible by Halloween. Glacier Point + ski resorts not yet open. Off-season pricing.
November–April
Snow season. December–February reliable powder. Ski-resort weddings (Heavenly, Squaw, Northstar). Lake-front venues stay open but limited outdoor time. Magical for couples who love alpine.
May
Shoulder. Snow melting, flowers haven't bloomed yet. Slushy ground, mud at lake-front venues. Skip unless you find a deal.
The real timeline

A summer Saturday on the lake.

11:00 AM
Bridal-party getting ready at lodging (Edgewood, Hyatt, or VRBO). Lake-side window light = beautiful prep shots.
2:30 PM
First look on the dock or beach. Most Tahoe couples skip this — it adds a magic moment that compounds the rest of the day.
4:30 PM
Ceremony lakeside or summit. 20–30 minutes. Sunset over Sierra Crest at 7:00 PM in summer.
5:15 PM
Family + bridal-party photos. 25 minutes max — guests are at cocktail hour with the lake view.
5:45 PM
Couple portraits at multiple lake-front spots. Boulders, beach, dock, pine grove. Wide-format Tahoe gallery.
6:45 PM
Sunset hits the granite peaks across the lake. The 15-minute window every Tahoe photographer plans the day around.
7:00 PM
Reception. Bistro lights + lake reflections + eventual stargazing.
FAQ

Most-asked questions.

Tahoe in summer or winter?+
Both work — they are completely different galleries. Summer (June–early October) = blue lake, alpine wildflowers, sunset over the Sierra. Winter (December–March) = snow on pines, frozen edges of the lake, ski-resort backdrops, indoor reception. Pick based on which gallery moves you. Avoid May (mud) and November (gray, no snow yet).
What about wildfire smoke?+
Real risk in late July, August, early September. The 2021 Caldor Fire shut down the entire South Lake basin for 3 weeks. Mitigation: book June, late September, or October–March. Build a 3-day weather buffer into the trip. AGV always brings a smoke-day backup plan in the contract.
Tahoe altitude — should we worry?+
Lake level is 6,225 ft (most guests fine). Heavenly summit is 9,200 ft (some couples and guests feel it). Squaw High Camp is 8,200 ft. If your guests come from sea level, give them at least a half-day before any ceremony at altitude. Push hydration aggressively — double normal water intake.
Should we get married on the California or Nevada side?+
California side (Tahoe City, South Lake): more accessible from SF, more dining, more Airbnb. Nevada side (Incline Village, Crystal Bay): Hyatt Regency, beautiful beaches, less traffic, casinos for after-party. For most weddings the California side is simpler unless you specifically want the Hyatt or beachfront on the east shore.
Marriage license in California or Nevada?+
Nevada is the easy answer — same-day license at the Carson City clerk, no waiting period, $80 fee. If your wedding is in Nevada, get a Nevada license. If in California, file at El Dorado County clerk in South Lake Tahoe — also same-day, $115. Both valid for 90 days.
Where do guests stay?+
Edgewood Tahoe ($600–1,400, the dream), Hyatt Regency Incline Village ($400–800), Marriott Grand Residence ($300–600), Heavenly Village (mid-tier $300–500), Camp Richardson Historic Resort ($250–450, charming + cabin-style), Airbnb dense around South Lake + Heavenly + Tahoe City. Book 8+ months out for any peak weekend.
How much does a Lake Tahoe wedding photographer cost?+
AGV starts at $4,500 for 8 hours of Tahoe coverage including travel from the Bay Area. Most couples book 10 hours ($5,500–$7,000) which covers getting-ready + first look + ceremony + full reception. Multi-day weekend coverage $7,500+. Tahoe is a 4-hour drive from the Bay Area — we typically come up the night before.
Drive vs fly to Tahoe?+
Drive from SF: 4 hrs without traffic, 6 hrs with Friday traffic. Reno airport (RNO): 45 min drive to North Shore, 1 hr to South Shore, 50+ daily flights. South Lake Tahoe airport (TVL): smaller, more weather closures, but a 5-min drive to most South Shore venues. For 30+ guests, recommend they fly into Reno.
