Half Moon Bay Elopement Photography

A Half Moon Bay elopement,
cliffside.

Six spots, the tide rules, the fog calendar, and the September secret. From a Bay Area coastal photographer who has been on this stretch of Highway 1 100+ times.

Half Moon Bay is the closest cliffside coastal wedding to San Francisco. One hour from the city. No flights, no shuttle buses, no overnight required for guests.

It is also the foggiest place in California in summer. June through August your sunset is gone by 4 PM. September and October are the local secret — clearest skies, warmest water, fewest crowds.

Pick September or April. Skip July. Watch the tide.

The 6 spots

Where HMB weddings actually happen.

01
$$$$

Ritz-Carlton Half Moon Bay

Cliff-top resort with bagpiper at sunset (a Ritz tradition). $35K+ ceremony fee. The most photographic Bay Area coastal venue. Top of the list.

02
Elopement

Mavericks Beach (Pillar Point)

The legendary big-wave surf break in winter, gentle beach in summer. No permit needed for couple-only ceremonies. Bluff overlook = the iconic frame.

03
Elopement

Devil's Slide Trail

1.3-mile coastal cliff path north of HMB. Free, no permit, dramatic Pacific views. Park at Pacifica side. Best at golden hour.

04
Elopement

Pillar Point Marsh + Bluffs

Free public access. Wildflower bluffs in spring. Tide pools at low tide. Underused — most HMB photographers skip this.

05
$$$

Cetrella Restaurant Lawn

Mediterranean restaurant with cliff lawn for private ceremonies. $8–15K. Best for 30–80 guests. Walking distance to HMB Plaza.

06
$$$

Cypress Inn at Miramar Beach

Charming oceanfront B&B. Beach ceremony + on-property reception. $10–18K. Books 9 months out.

The tide rules

What the tide does.

Low tide
Tide pools accessible. Beach widens. Sand stays compacted (no sinking shoes). Best for portraits.
Mid tide
Standard beach width. Most weddings shoot here. No tide-pool access.
High tide
Beach narrows. Waves splash close. Tide pools submerged. NOT ideal for ground-level ceremony.
King tide (rare)
Beach can disappear. Storm-surge risk. Check NOAA tide forecasts 7 days out + day-of.

The fog calendar

When fog will ruin your sunset.

Mid-May to mid-September

Marine-layer fog peaks. Mornings socked-in until 11 AM. Late-afternoon clears 4–6 PM, then fogs again at 7 PM. Sunset is unreliable.

October to April

Clear-sky season. Best for sunset ceremonies. October + April are the photographer secret months.

September Indian summer

70°F afternoons, no fog, Pacific water at warmest. The local secret — book this if you can.

FAQ

Most-asked questions.

Is Half Moon Bay only good in summer?+
Actually the opposite. Summer is the foggiest season. The clearest, warmest, most photogenic Half Moon Bay months are September and October (Indian summer) and April (wildflower bluffs). Skip June–August unless you embrace the fog as part of the vibe.
Do we need a permit for a HMB beach elopement?+
Most HMB beaches are State Parks. Couple-only elopements with no setup (no chairs, no arch, just you + officiant) do not require a permit. Add chairs or an arch and you need a $200+ State Park wedding permit, file 30 days out. Mavericks Beach + Pillar Point are technically County-managed and have looser rules.
How does tide affect the photos?+
Hugely. Plan ceremony for low-to-mid tide. King tide can completely flood the ceremony spot. Check NOAA tide forecasts when picking your date — high tide at 6 PM in summer = no beach for sunset shoot.
What about the Ritz-Carlton bagpiper?+
Real and worth booking. The Ritz HMB has a bagpiper at sunset every evening — included in any wedding package. The bagpipes-on-the-cliff-edge ceremony shot is iconic. Add it as your processional or recessional.
How much does a HMB wedding photographer cost?+
AGV starts at $3,500 for 6 hours of HMB coverage (2-hr local travel from SF). Most couples book 8 hours ($4,500–5,500). Ritz weddings or multi-day weekends $6,500–8,000. Elopements 2–3 hours from $1,800.
Can our dog come?+
On-leash on most HMB beaches. The Ritz allows dogs in the bridal-party portrait area. Pillar Point + Devil's Slide trail = dog-friendly. Bring water + a towel for sand removal.
Where do guests stay?+
Ritz-Carlton ($600–1,400/night, on-property if you book the Ritz), Cypress Inn at Miramar ($350–550), Oceano Hotel ($250–450, family-owned), Beach House Half Moon Bay ($400–700, suites). Plenty of Airbnb in HMB downtown + Miramar.
Drive from SF?+
1 hr from downtown SF, 45 min from SFO airport, 30 min from Bay Area peninsula. Easy day trip. No transportation logistics like Big Sur or Tahoe — guests can self-drive without overnight.
