Big Sur is the most photographed stretch of coastline in California. It is also where most elopements go wrong.

The road closes. The fog hides the ocean. Bixby Bridge is full of tourists at sunset. McWay requires a permit nobody filed. Pfeiffer Beach gates close 30 minutes before the light is right.

None of that has to happen. With the right spot, the right hour, and a backup plan filed two weeks out, Big Sur is unbeatable.

Bixby Bridge Overlook

The iconic frame. North side pullout, sunset lights the bridge from behind. 5–10 min ceremony max — Caltrans cars come through. Best for portrait sessions, not full ceremonies.

No permit · public viewpoint

McWay Falls (Julia Pfeiffer Burns SP)

The 80-foot waterfall pouring onto a beach. Vow exchange on the overlook deck. Surreal at golden hour. Crowded after 11 AM.

Pfeiffer Beach

The "purple sand" beach with the Keyhole Arch. Sunset light through the arch is legendary 30 min before sundown. Narrow road, $15 day-use, gates close at sunset.

The luxury cliff resort. $4,000+ ceremony fee for non-guests. Tree-houses, infinity pools, fire pit terrace. The most editorial Big Sur venue.

Boutique riverside lodge with redwood ceremonies. Mid-budget Big Sur option ($2,500 venue fee). Cabins on-site for guests.

Underused. Coastal bluff ceremonies, river-mouth portraits. Quieter than Pfeiffer. 1-mile walk to ceremony spot — comfortable shoes required.

A Saturday on the coast.

12:00 PM
Arrive Big Sur. Lunch at Big Sur Bakery or Sierra Mar at Post Ranch. Eat real food — sunset shoot has no break.
2:30 PM
Getting ready coverage at lodging (Post Ranch / Glen Oaks / Ventana). 90 min.
4:00 PM
First look at the redwoods or cliff edge. Privacy + emotional reaction shot before the public arrives.
4:30 PM
Ceremony at chosen spot (Bixby / McWay / Pfeiffer). 15–25 minutes. Light is still warm.
5:00 PM
Couple portraits at sunset. The 45 minutes before sundown = the entire reason you are here. We move 2–3 spots in this window.
6:30 PM
Dinner reception at venue. Candlelight + golden-hour-after coverage of toasts + first dance.

Most-asked questions.

Is Big Sur the right elopement spot for us?+
If you want the most cinematic backdrop in California and you do not need 50+ guests, yes. If your guests need accessibility, easy parking, or hotels under $400/night — pick Carmel or Wine Country instead. Big Sur is for couples + 10–25 closest people.
What about wildfires and road closures?+
Big Sur experiences fire season July–November and atmospheric river closures December–February. Highway 1 has closed for weeks at a time in past years. Book a date April–June or late September–early November for the lowest closure risk. AGV builds a backup-venue clause into every Big Sur contract.
Fog risk?+
Real. The marine layer rolls in unpredictably May–August. Two mitigations: pick September–October weddings (clearest months); shoot inland at the redwoods if the coast is socked in. Either still produces stunning gallery — fog gets moody, not bad.
Where do we actually stay?+
Post Ranch Inn ($1,800–$3,500/night, the dream), Ventana Big Sur ($800–$1,400, beautiful, more accessible), Glen Oaks ($400–$700, riverside cabins, mid-budget), Big Sur River Inn ($300–$500, basic but central). Book 6–9 months out for any peak weekend.
What does a Big Sur wedding photographer cost?+
AGV starts at $4,500 for 6-hour Big Sur coverage including travel from the Bay Area. Most couples book 8–10 hours ($5,500–$7,500) which covers getting-ready + ceremony + golden-hour portraits + reception. Multi-day weekends are quoted separately.
Do you handle the permit?+
Yes. We file state-park wedding permits 30+ days out. $200 fee passed through at cost. National-park (Pinnacles or Pfeiffer Big Sur) permits we file too. Resort venues (Post Ranch, Ventana) handle their own.
Can our dog come?+
McWay Falls and Pfeiffer Beach are dog-friendly on-leash. Post Ranch + Ventana are dog-welcoming. State parks have leash rules. Yes — bring the dog. Always a great gallery moment.
